Mid-Week Commodity ETF Update!

November 5, 2011 Posted by admin

Commodities and stocks have been on fire the past two weeks and I think it just may be time for things to take a breather. While I continue to stay long, taking some money off the table to lock in profits is a safe play.

If you look  at the charts we can tell the odds are pointing to some type of pause or pullback in the coming days. I figure any day now we could see some profit taking.

Gold ETF Trading – GLD

The Gold ETF is one of my favorite trading vehicles. Using simple trend lines and looking at the recent price action you can see that the price of gold is looking ready for a pullback. Buying at this level is chasing and that generally means you buy at the high and panic out at the low.

Silver ETF Trading – SLV

The Silver ETF looks to be in the same boat as gold. I expect to see some sideways price action or a pullback.

Natural Gas ETF Trading – UNG

The Natural Gas ETF sure has given everyone a wild ride in the past 6 months. The bear market is still in place which can be seen on the daily chart. So far this week the price has broken down and trading at the $11 support level. This fund could generate a buy or sell signal with my trading model in the coming days so I am waiting for a clear entry and exit point before jumping on the gas wagon.

Crude Oil ETF Trading – USO

The Crude Oil ETF has broken above its resistance trend line this week but still struggling to move above the August high. Volume is declining while the price rises which is a bearish indicator. USO looks ready for some type of a pullback as it digests this breakout before moving higher.

Mid-Week GLD, SLV, UNG, USO ETF Trading Report

What does the general public hear and think about the stock market?

From recent emails, local financial news shows, family, friends etc… all I am hearing is how strong the market is. Indexes are making new yearly highs and company earnings are better than expected this quarter. Sounds like all we need to do is buy and life will be great!

Well in my opinion the market is the perfect tool for misguiding and frustrating the general public. All my indicators are telling me we need more of a correction before rallying much higher. The market (smart money) generally anticipates good and bad news several weeks if not a month in advance. So the question is:

Are company earnings already priced into the market?

Is all this positive market coverage getting the general public to buy up here at this possible market top?

The answer is, only time will tell. No one knows for sure what the market is going to do but short term moves can be predicted with relatively high accuracy.

Don’t get me wrong, I am still bullish on the market but with all this good news becoming public information you have to wonder what is next. I am still long the market but trimming my positions to lock in profits and still stay in the game.

The Top 10 Model Train Shops in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee

January 20, 2010 Posted by admin

There are fantastic model railroading hobby shops all across the United States.  These stores all look like a lot of fun to visit, but what are the most popular?   Here is a list for the states of Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The most popular model railroading shops (based on online chatter) in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee are:

10. Mishawaka Rail Yard in Mishawaka, Indiana

A Tie for Number 8

8. BAD Hobbies in Nicholasville, Kentucky

8. Rupel Toy Trains in Elkhart, Indiana

7. Park Lane Hobbies in Dyer, Indiana

6. George’s Train Shop in Huntington, Indiana

5. Aardvark’s Model Train Shop in Nashville, Tennessee

4. Phil’s Hobby Shop in Fort Wayne, Indiana

3. Berkshire Trains in Lexington, Kentucky

2. Scale Reproductions Hobby Shop in Louisville, Kentucky

…and the most popular shop for model trains in Indiana, Kentucky, or Tennessee is…

1. Johnny’s Toys in Covington, Kentucky

Hobby shops not quite making my top 10 were G and G Hobbies in Griffith, Indiana; Joe’s Hobby Barn in Terre Haute, Indiana; Linville Signs and Hobbies in Batesville, Indiana; Toys Forever Models and Hobbies in Muncie, Indiana; Train Express in Indianapolis, Indiana; Watts Train Shop in Zionsville, Indiana; Wayne’s Trains and Train Central in Indianapolis, Indiana; L and N Trains and Things in Louisville, Kentucky; The Roundhouse in Louisville, Kentucky; Chattanooga Depot in Chattanooga, Tennessee; and South Bound Trains in Franklin, Tennessee.

So, there are clearly many great model railroading shops all over Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee, with all three states having stores in the top five.  Indiana had the most in the top ten with five, but Kentucky had four in the top ten – and also had all of the top three spots.

When in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee be sure to visit some of the excellent railroading museums including Depot Railroad Museum in Salem,Indiana; Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson, Indiana; Indiana Railway Museum in French Lick, Indiana; Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville, Indiana; Bluegrass Railroad Museum in Versailles, Kentucky; Nostalga Station in Versailles, Kentucky; Casey Jones Home and Railroad Museum in Jackson, Tennessee; Tennessee Central Railway Museum in Nashville, Tennessee; and Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga.

I compiled this list by searching for the hobby shops listed on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online.  I further screened this list to include only pages that mentioned model railroading.

Model train track layout ideas for the beginner

January 5, 2010 Posted by admin

As a beginner in the hobby, it’s easy to get carried away when creating a model train track layout. After the initial excitement of creating your first track, you will quickly have ideas about what to create next. Many people will start with a simple design such as the basic oval shape. This is the best way to get started. If you found that you could put this together quite easily, and without making any errors, then you should think about something more complex.

The next thing to move onto is the covered oval. This is where you keep the basic oval that you created but you have some sections of the track covered. You can use scenery for this, such as bridges, Aqueducts or other things. You can also have a section of track that runs over the lower section. This of course, takes a lot more planning and skill, but it creates a great effect, and lets you learn about other design options.

By creating an oval with a covered section, you also manage to keep things simple. This is really important so that you are able to complete the track as per your design. When you try to get too complicated you create a lot of unnecessary problems. At the beginning of the process it’s best to slowly build up your skill level a bit at a time.

People that are new to creating model railway tracks usually encounter issues or problems when they try to create something that requires more sill than they have. You can certainly build up to a very high skill level in track design but it takes time. You also need to move through the different stages of progression. As with any endeavor, you need to put in the effort and can’t expect to be an expert overnight.

The oval is very easy and it won’t need you to ask for help. You can just follow the instructions that are included in the train kit that you bought. You can then create additional sections of track that you can link to the oval. This is a good way to create straight sections although you should keep them small to begin with. You can also create straight sections on another platform. This gives you the experience without interfering with your working oval track.

Once you have this experience, then you can create themed based layouts. You can find these in many magazines or even buy sections of track to create these ideas. There are many great track designs that you can create. You can create a logging layout with shay locomotives transporting logs to the sawmill. This looks great as the trains carry cut wood to the furniture shops in the town center. You can create a mixture of urban and countryside themes.

Another good design is a number of trains running through the Appalachian Mountains. The train carries coal from the mines to the power stations. As you can see, you can quickly move to more complex designs that look great.
