How To Bleed Your Cigar Lighter

November 29, 2010 Posted by admin

Your cigar lighter is an integral part of the smoking process, whether you have a torch lighter, dual torch or another type of lighter. However, lighter maintenance and troubleshooting should be part of your regular care regimen, in order to ensure that your lighter works properly every time. That said, some smokers are unaware of the importance of bleeding your lighter. Regularly bleeding your lighter will help ensure that your smoking experience is enjoyable.

Why does your lighter need to be bled? The bleeding process ensures that all old fuel and air within the fuel chamber are eliminated. This ensures that you have a smooth, even flame, without any fears of flares or sputtering. The bleeding process is simple and effective. Youll need only a single tool and a few safety steps to ensure your lighter is performing properly.

The first step is to hold the lighter vertically, with the bottom of the lighter facing upward. Do not hold the lighter near your face or your ears during this process. Now, locate the filler nozzle, which is the metal nipple on the bottom of the lighter through which fuel is added. Once you have located the nozzle, you will need a small screwdriver or another similar tool. Depress the nozzle with the tool and you will hear the hiss of escaping gas and air. Do not perform this operation near any open flame.

In a short time, the hissing sound will stop and you can release the nozzle. Shake the lighter vigorously several times. Now, insert the tool into the filler nozzle once more. You will hear the lighter begin hissing again, though it may sputter a bit. When the hissing stops (keep the lighter away from your ears), you can refill the lighter. Maintain the upright position while refilling the lighter.

You should bleed your lighter whenever you notice that the fuel is becoming low. If your lighter does not have a means to check the fuel level, you will have to rely on the performance of the flame. Spitting or flaring are good signs that your lighter is nearing the empty mark and needs to be bled. Exercise care when bleeding and you will remain safe during this vital process.

My Cigar Lighter Has Gas But Will Not Light

November 26, 2010 Posted by admin

Refillable butane lighters represent one of the most durable and reliable devices on the market. Of course, any device can malfunction and every device is subject to damage from incorrect handling. These devices, despite their characteristic durability, do have fragile elements and they can sometimes become damaged to the point of leaking fuel which is most often the cause of any hissing noises that one may hear emanating from the device. Troubleshooting these issues is usually fairly straightforward.

A hissing sound emanating from a lighter almost always means that there is a stuck release valve. One can experiment a bit by pushing down the fuel release button a few times to see if the problem can be remedied in this fashion. If the problem fails to return, it’s likely that there was simply a stuck valve that was moved into place by depressing and releasing the button. More severe problems require the services of a tech.

If the hissing noise is always audible, it generally means that there is a severe leak somewhere in the lighter and that there is a hazard of having the lighter explode. Lighters found in this condition should not be filled. For obvious reasons, they will lose all their fuel in short order and may prove impossible to fill from the start. Do not keep such lighters filled and in one’s pocket! It’s best to let them run out of fuel on their own.

If the torch has a slow hiss and can still be lit-again, one should not attempt this-the leak may be simply the result of a leak on the refill valve or another part of the device but the leak may not have become a catastrophic issue as of yet. Any leak of pressurized gas, however, will likely be a problem that will get worse with time. A leaking torch is not a safe device and should not be used until it is properly fixed by a qualified individual.

Cigar lighters and cigarette lighters that use butane as their fuel source contain pressurized gas. Though these devices can take a lot of abuse and can provide a lifetime of safe and reliable service, they must be treated with kindness. Never stick anything into the ignition area and never subject the case to abuse. If the lighter starts hissing after such an incident, it’s likely that there is significant damage to the device that necessitates repair.

Steps To Lighting Your Cigar Using A Cigar Lighter

November 5, 2010 Posted by admin

Are you new to the world of cigar smoking? If so, then you likely have several questions concerning the use of a cigar lighter to get that smoke lit. Of course, actually getting the cigar to light is pretty important, but you will find that there is more to consider here than just the method of applying the flame to tobacco. You will need patience, knowledge and the right set of tools. Butane torch lighters and guillotine cutters are the best options for the novice cigar smoker and will help to ensure that you have the simplest, most enjoyable smoke possible.

The first thing you need to do is to remove about 1/8th of an inch from the cap of the cigar. To do this, place the cutter on the shoulder of the cap and cut. You will find that this really only applies to guillotine cutters, though, as the process is different with scissors or a punch. When the cap has been cut, you can start the actual lighting process. However, don’t touch that flame to the cigar just yet. You need to warm it up first.

This is a process called toasting and it is required to bring the tobacco up to temperature. You should also ensure that the lighter you use is fueled with butane, rather than lighter fluid, as butane is odorless and tasteless. Therefore, it will not taint the cigar with any chemical flavors or odors. Once the cigar has been toasted, you can continue with the lighting process. Place the cigar in your mouth at a 45-degree angle. Hold the cigar’s body with one hand and use the other to hold the lighter. Light the lighter and hold the cigar over the flame. Turn the cigar in your mouth, and draw on it as it turns.

Keep turning the cigar throughout the lighting process. When the entire cigar has caught, inspect the end for any area that did not light properly. You may need to reapply the flame at this point. You can also breathe on the area to help it catch and stay lit.

Once the foot of the cigar is lit, take it out of your mouth. You’ll need to visually inspect the cigar to make sure that the entire surface was lit. If you see areas that did not light, or are only smoldering, you’ll need to relight the cigar once more. Just repeat the process above and you will have your cigar burning bright in no time. In just moments, you will be able to relax with that delightful flavor and aroma.

How Many Times Can I Light a Typical Cigar Lighter?

November 2, 2010 Posted by admin

A reliable, working cigar lighter is essential to being able to light up whenever you want. Whether you choose butane torch lighters (a choice growing in popularity) a Zippo or a disposable option, youll probably want to know just how many lights youll get out of it. This is an understandable question. However, you will not find a simple answer. Why is there no easy answer to this question? It certainly makes a great deal of sense to ask it, as the answer will determine just how much you have to spend on additional fuel or new lighters.

Unfortunately for confirmed smokers, there is no simple answer to this question. The number of lights that a lighter is capable of producing does not necessarily equate to the number of cigars you can light. Why is this? It all boils down to flame configuration and the duration of your light. Whats this all about? In order to understand this conundrum, youll need to know more about the lighting process, itself.

At least one manufacturer of disposable lighters claims that their products will light a staggering 3,000 times. However, that doesnt mean that youll be able to light or relight 3,000 cigars. Why not? You can certainly light such a lighter that many times, but you wont be able to apply that to lighting cigars. Why is there such confusion surrounding the topic?

First, you will need to consider the various flame configurations. There are double and triple jet lighters on the market, as well as single jets and disposable butane lighters. Each uses fuel differently. Obviously, the more jets there are on the lighter, the more fuel it will use. Likewise, the question of lighting duration must be answered. Not all smokers light their cigars in the same amount of time. In addition, lighting a cigar takes longer than simply depressing the igniter. You will have to maintain that flame for some time in order to achieve an even light on your cigar.

Therefore, the amount of time that it takes you to light your cigar is directly proportional to the total number of lights you get out of that lighter. Does this sound confusing? If so, then you are not alone. The best option for you if you simply must know how many lights youll get out of the average cigar lighter is to put one to the test. Pickup an affordable cigar lighter and track how many cigars you are able to light with it. This will give you a good benchmark for future lighter purchases.

Changing the Flint in Your Lighter

October 4, 2010 Posted by admin

One of the considerations you will need to make when you buy Zippo lighters is whether or not you know how to change the flint. The flint in your lighter is a vital consideration, of course; without it, you have no way to light your smoke. However, changing out that flint might just pose a problem for first time users. How do you change it? The process is quite simple and youll find the steps below.

Step One: You will first need to slide the outer case off the inner insert, just as you would if you were going to refill the lighter fluid. Be careful when doing this, so as not to damage any components.

Step Two: Now that you have the lighter apart, locate the flint tube/screw assembly. This should be located on the bottom of the lighter. Make sure that you have a small flathead screwdriver handy, or another tool that fits the slot in the screw head.

Step Three: Once you have located the screw, unscrew it and remove it from the assembly. The spring and the flint tube should slide free. Do not damage the spring during this process.

Step Four: Check the flint tube to make sure that there is no flint remaining in it. If you find flint fragments, remove them now. Never add new flint if there are fragments in the tube.

Step Five: Put the new flint into the tube. Make sure that you do not damage the flint, the tube or the spring (the spring should be off at this point) during this part of the process.

Step Six: Replace the spring into the assembly, being careful not to bend or damage it.

Step Seven: Slide the assembly back into the inner insert and tighten the screw lightly. Make sure that the assembly is fully screwed in place, but make sure that you do not over tighten the screw, as this can strip the threads and prevent you from removing it in the future.

Step Eight: Replace the inner insert into the outer case. If the case does not fit properly, make sure that the flint tube screw is fully tightened.

Youve now replaced the flint in your Zippo; as you practice this process, you will find that it becomes simpler and simpler to accomplish and that you can finish it in a matter of mere minutes (or seconds, even!)

Maintaining a Butane Lighter

October 1, 2010 Posted by admin

High-end butane lighters are of a quality that enables them to provide service for many years. This is dependent, however, upon keeping the lighter in good working order. Fortunately, butane lighters are enormously simple devices and much of their reliability owes to this fact.

A Nibo lighter is a good example of a high-quality, refillable butane lighter. They produce a characteristically compact and hot flame that enables them to be used in conditions where a regular butane would stand little chance of functioning. Caring for these lighters is a combination of looking after the mechanical elements and the cosmetic parts of the lighter.

The mechanics of a butane lighter are enormously simple and, so long as they are kept clean, they should hardly ever prove subject to failure. Keep them free of debris, especially around the jet and the flint wheel. Most often, any stray lint or grit that makes its way into the lighter may be removed by simply inverting the lighter and tapping it, gently, on a hard surface. Obstructions are one of the most common causes of lighter failure but there’s no reason that one cannot remedy this situation very easily. If the obstruction is particularly stubborn, a small pick or a tweezers may be used to remove it.

The filler valve on the lighter also needs to be kept free of obstructions. Make certain of this before attempting to refill the lighter and, if anything is blocking the hole, simply remove it by tapping or cleaning it out with a tool. Be careful not to depress the valve, however. Some butane lighters use flints. Make certain that the lighter has a fresh one before setting out on any adventures.

Fuel should be chosen for purity. More expensive lighters generally require impurity-free fuel to ensure that they perform up to their highest level. This fuel isn’t much more expensive than the lower grades of butane and the performance is markedly better. It’s worth it to spend the few extra dollars to get the best fuel. If the lighter fails to ignite after refueling, there is likely air caught in the reservoir. To discharge it and restore flow, simply depress the fuel release button without tripping the igniter mechanism. This usually needs to be done for only a second or two before proper flow is restored to the lighter and it ignites.

Does Your Lighter Hiss, But Not Light?

September 19, 2010 Posted by admin

Whether you smoke a pipe, cigars or cigarettes, youll need a source of flame. Matches can work, but lighters are far more convenient and, as they are reusable, theyre more economical, to boot. However, if your lighter will not ignite, it can be a frustrating experience, particularly if you know that youve refilled the butane and that your flint is in good condition.

When the igniter of the lighter is pressed down, no flame appears. The lighter does, however, emit a hissing sound, as of fuel escaping. What could be going on? Whats wrong with your lighter? Actually, this situation can be remedied quite easily, though youll need to troubleshoot your lighter a bit first.

Before doing anything else, make sure that your lighter is not blocked with lint, dirt or debris. Even a small obstruction can keep your lighter from working properly. While checking this, keep your fingers well away from the igniter, in order to avoid potential harm. If you locate debris, remove it carefully and then attempt to ignite your lighter. If it still fails to light, youll need to dig a bit further.

The most common problem that causes a hissing sound with a failure to ignite, is the flame height selector being set too high. Check your flame adjuster to determine just how high you have that flame set. On disposable lighters, this will be a simple plastic slide set on the back of the lighter, just below the base of the metal lighter cap. On more expensive jet lighters, the flame adjuster will most likely be located on the bottom of the lighter, usually near (or surrounding) the refill port.

To adjust the flame height, youll need a very small flathead screwdriver. Turn the flame adjuster towards the minus symbol. Be careful not to turn it too far, though. Make a small adjustment toward the minimum end of the range and then attempt to light the lighter once more. If you still hear the hissing sound, but the lighter does not ignite, then you need to continue adjusting the flame height. You should do this in increments, in order to ensure that you are able to achieve the highest flame height for your needs, while still being able to light the lighter.

Tips on Purchasing a Butane Lighter

September 4, 2010 Posted by admin

The world is quickly moving away from the culture of disposable goods and, so far as the environment is concerned, good riddance to that culture. Refillable lighters represent one of the most-popular ways people have found to save money and landfill space. Of course, they also have a lot of style. The explosion of new designs has made sure that almost anyone can find a model that suits them to a “T”.

Butane torch lighters tend to turn heads. It’s hard not to look when one catches sight of a double or triple blue flame out of the corner of one’s eye. The Colibri lighter company makes many such models which are representative of the style: sleek, modern and aesthetically-pleasing. These lighters have practical value, as well. As the butane has no taste or odor, it is perfectly safe to light a cigar or pipe with these models without risking adding the lighter fluid flavor that causes many smokers to eschew the traditional liquid-fueled refillables. Where fuel is concerned, however, just as is the case with an expensive sports car, high-end equipment calls for high-end fuel.

For those who prefer a classic style, a fluid-filled lighter is oftentimes the choice. These lighters can be as elegant as the most refined cigar party or as rebellious as a biker jacket depending upon the hand that wields them. They are reliable, durable and have a timeless feel. Their reliability makes them particularly well-suited for outdoor applications whether those applications be lighting up a pipe out on the water while fishing or getting a campfire going in the wind and rain.

Refueling these lighters is a very easy affair. The canisters used to dispense the butane are designed to mate with the receivers on the bottom of these lighters which ensures that there are no mishaps. One should never attempt to force an incorrect adapter or to use a fuel other than butane in these lighters. There are various grades of butane available on the market. If one has purchased an elegant lighter, it makes sense to purchase a high grade of butane to go with it. The performance, of course, will also be much better.

High-quality products do more than flatter our egos. They also eliminate waste and, in the case of lighters, make the experience of smoking more enjoyable. These lighters now come in a wide enough variety of styles that most anyone can find something that reflects their personality. If a torch lighter is a bit too much, there are, of course, butane refillables that put out a less-intense, yellow flame. Either way, one can be sure that their lighter will provide many years of reliable, and fashionable, service.
